Mammoth Walk in Snow

A visit to Yellowstone in winter, and the covering of snow simplifies the view: a tracery of walkway, the vivid blue of a hot pool.

A Glimmer of Sunlight

We were exploring the Clark's Fork Canyon on a grey and rainy day. After wandering up a side trail for a bit, we turned around to come back to the main road. I noticed the sun was finally starting to break through the clouds, and I quickly tried to get some photos showing the contrast of the light to the brooding atmosphere. I had to use a rock as a tripod.

Everyone takes photos of the old Moultan barns on Mormon Row in the Tetons, but I wanted my own. I had the placer to myself that May morning, but as I packed up everything to leave, it felt like someone was watching me. I looked back toward the barn, and there was a bison! He soon decided I wasn't of much interest, and started walking parallel to me. I saw he'd go in front of the barn, so I quickly put the camera on the tripod again, and managed to get three shots as he walked along. This was the only one with his complete silhouette!

Pairing Off

During the bison rut, all the cows stay together in groups, and the bulls come to the group and try to entice a cow away for courtship. Once they've paired up, they spend the day together. Several pairs were in this area, and a few bulls were trying to steal cows from other bulls. Mostly the cow goes where she wants, and the bull follows along.

Guiding Light

I have been on the Beartooth Highway many times, but this was the first time I saw Pilot Peak from this angle (just not looking before!) I used HDR to bring out the detail in the still shadowed foreground. The Peak was just glowing in the morning light, although the very tip was still shaded by clouds.

Gold in the Hills

The sunlight breaking through the clouds placed a wonderful gold highlight on Hunter Peak. I used HDR to bring out the detail in the still shadowed foreground. This photo can only be printed in the full frame sizes.
